Freight rates are based upon a variety of factors:
  • Product weight including pallet weight
  • Distance the shipment is traveling – where it is shipping from and to
  • Product density
  • Product value
  • Product’s handling, loadability and susceptibility to damage
The last three items aid in establishing the classification – also referred to as class.  According to the National Motor Freight Classification tariff, there are currently eighteen product classifications ranging from a low of 50 to a high of 500.  The higher the class, the higher the freight rate.

Typically, bargain and remainder books are rated at class 60 – NMFC 161630 sub 0.  Since new books from the publisher are typically shipped at class 65, you need to be sure whenever you are shipping or receiving bargain books to include the NMFC number on the bill of lading.  If you only list the product description i.e. books – class 60 without the NMFC number, many carriers will automatically rate the shipment at class 65.  This will result in higher shipping costs.
