Introducing "Bargain Book News"
by Larry May

Well, here it is, the very first issue of “Bargain Book News.” We are delighted to present it to you and look forward to many more. Newsletters have long been recognized as an important tool in connecting and informing people around an important theme. The theme here, of course, is the many faces of the bargain book industry.
“Bargain Book News” will be designed to communicate industry news year round on a twice monthly basis. The presentation will be through an e-zine format which is the industry’s term for a newsletter sent by email. E-zines offer an innovative approach to reaching a target audience while dispensing pertinent industry information. The newsletter will offer several features to its readers including advertising opportunities, event information, industry resources, and website linking. “Bargain Book News” has an “opt in” policy that assures those receiving the newsletter that they have indeed asked to receive it. There is also a simple linking feature allowing you to share the information with colleagues by simply clicking the “tell a friend” icon and typing in the requested information.
Keeping in mind that effective communication is critical in relationships and vital to success, we would like to make “Bargain Book News” as much yours as it is ours. Keep us informed, notify us of upcoming events, pass on pertinent information; and, by all means, let us know what you think.

Freight Tip
When receiving freight always, always inspect the skid, count the boxes and note any damaged merchandise on the bill of lading before signing that same bill of lading.  The driver should also sign before leaving the premises.

Trade Show Tip:
Statistics show that 80%, that’s right, 80% of contacts made at trade shows are never followed up.  Return on investment (ROI) increases dramatically when contacts become customers.  Consider spending the day after the show organizing business cards and orders so that follow up can be quick and effective.  Just following up on 2 additional contacts out of every 10 will double what most vendors do.  It’s worth the effort.

Industry Lingo

Remainders:  people often use the term “remainders” to encompass the bargain book industry as a whole.  The original term represented books that “remained” in the warehouse. A publisher may have printed 20,000 copies of a book and sold 10,000 copies. The 10,000 that never left the warehouse were called “remainders.” These books are typically boxed and in pristine condition and generally sold to wholesalers, or large chain stores by a bid list.
