President Bush Signs New Immigration Laws

On Friday, November 1, 2002, President Bush signed a bill into law that will have a positive impact on several aspects of business immigration. The 21st Century Department of Justice Appropriates Authorization Act, would permit H-1B visa holders who have long pending labor certification applications to extend their status beyond the current six year limitation; expands and extends the Conrad J-1 program for medical doctors; and addresses certain immigrant investor issues.

Senator Gephart Proposes Earned Legal Adjustment Bill
Possible "Amnesty" for Illegal Aliens

The proposed Earned Legalization and Family Unification Act of 2002 Legislation introduced into the Senate by Senator Richard Gephart will allow many "illegal" foreign nationals to become permanent residents. Advocates for legal immigration hope this bill will become law sometime next year.

Cuidad Juarez Stops Processing Visas for Non-Mexican Nationals

All categories of business immigration, including unskilled workers, continue to be current, which means that all workers with approved visa numbers can apply for adjustment of status or consular processing. If you have an approved I140 and have not applied for adjustment of status (the final phase of the permanent residence application), now is the time to do it.
