Zend Frameworks and Vaporous APIs
The recent annoucement of the vaporware Zend Framework has sparked lots
of speculation. Given the sparse amount of information, I can safely
say that I have every chance of being wrong (or right) in what I say
next...

Zend Framework Wish-list
As has been widely discussed, Zend announced its PHP Framework this
week. I wasn't invited to participate, so I think I can offer an
unbiased opinion. The primary misconception seems to be that there is
no code, and this isn't true. I'm particularly interested to see
whether this effort capitalizes on the chance to help PHP developers
write more secure code. In addition to support for filtering input
(which I'm told is included), here are some characteristics I'm hoping
to see...

Reading RSS Feeds with PHP
I'm sure everyone who calls themselves a PHP coder has heard of RSS. I
have to include the disclaimer, as I'm always surprised how little
penetration concepts I take for granted have in the rest of the world.
Recently, a colleague in the music industry started a blog. I saw there
were no RSS feeds available, and asked him when they'd be ready. He had
no clue what I was talking about. I shouldn't really have been
surprised. Nevertheless, RSS feeds are starting to take the world by
storm...

Ruby on Rails - Making Programmers Happy
Why is Ruby on Rails making programmers happy? "Change is instant. The
feedback loop between change and effect is incredibly important in
programming. If the distance is too far, you tend to grow uninterested
in testing your changes. You want to take bigger steps, so the penalty
of compilation, deployment and restarts is paid less often. That kills
productivity and motivation..."

The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly of PHP
There are millions of lines of PHP code freely available to download
from the Internet, but how can you tell if the script you are about to
install is going to send your site into oblivion or code nirvana?
Will the script you are about to install bring your server to a halt?
Does it open up glaring security issues? Is there a mess of complex and
poorly written code behind the sleek HTML exterior?

The PHP Scripting Language
f you’re familiar with any programming language, PHP should be easy to
learn. If you have done no programming before, the pace of this chapter
may be brisk but should still be manageable. PHP has a syntax similar
to JavaScript, which many web designers have learned; both languages
hark back to the classic C and Perl languages in syntax...

PHP Framework
The announcement of a forthcoming PHP framework reminds me of leading a
foot-race by a huge margin, then stopping and turning around to see
who's catching up. Recent news coverage of Ruby on Rails -- a language
and framework for creating web applications with a minimum of fuss --
has Zend and others in the PHP community reacting with what seems to
be, at first blush, raw panic...

Caching Result Sets in PHP: Porting the Code to PHP 5
In this part of the series, you will see in detail an updated version
of each class that composes the caching system, for a correct
implementation in PHP 5. Also, the “Cache” class will be modified to
work with an array processor class that handles array operations. It
should help refresh your memory of techniques related to object-
oriented programming...

Creating an Online Survey
We've all come across some sort of online survey that asks a few
questions about our interests or our online shopping experience. In
this article we're going to walk you through the creation of a similar
online survey that you can use on your own web site...
