Netcraft reports that by the end of January '02, PHP was running on 7,525,142 domains and 1,079,999 unique IP addresses (that's up nearly one million domains since our last newsletter!).
One of the especially neat characteristics of PHP is its ability to help manage content. Through its support of includes, dynamic
includes, templating and personalization, PHP can drive even the
largest database-driven, dynamic sites like SourceForge. Popular content-management solutions for web sites (like PHPNuke) have helped drive the trend.
Because it is so capable in areas related to content management, PHP is quickly becoming a favorite for news organizations. Many large daily newspapers have switched or are in the process of switching from high-end (read: expensive :-), enterprise content management systems to PHP-driven publishing.
We've therefore updated our "large organizations getting on the PHP bandwagon list"... CapitalOne, the large financial services firm, is on the PHP train and two significant entries are the Indianapolis Star and the Columbus (OH) Dispatch - both of which converted to PHP as their content management solution. We're guessing primary reasons include brutally fast performance, rock-solid reliability and its famous ease of use.
Large organizations now using PHP include:
MCI/Worldcom, Dialpad, Google, Mitsubishi, Redhat, MP3.com, Lycos, Ericsson, Volvo, NASA, the W3C, SourceForge, Honda, Xoom, WinAmp, Sony Music, Cap Gemini Ernst & Young, the US Army, UPI, the New York Yankees, Southwestern Bell, the San Diego Zoo, the Oakland Raiders, Audi, Subaru, VA Linux, Winamp, Duke University, Quicken, The Village Voice, Undernet, Access Micro, Columbus Dispatch, Indianapolis Star, Capital One
