Phil Gallagher honored at 2009 NEDA executive conference

Phil Gallagher

As seen in EMSNow, UK -- The National Electronic Distributors Association (NEDA) bestowed one of its highest honors, the Gail S. Carter Award, to Phil Gallagher of Avnet Technology Solutions. The annual presentation was held during the 2009 NEDA Executive Conference at the Renaissance Chicago Hotel. The award acknowledges electronic distributor principals who have made significant contributions to the distribution industry, have taken an active role in NEDA and civic affairs, and are recognized by the industry as leaders.

NEDA President Brian McNally of Arrow Electronics presented the award and praised Mr. Gallagher's contributions to the industry. Gallagher served on the NEDA Board in various capacities from 2001 to 2008. He served as its president from 2005 to 2007. Throughout his tenure, he was instrumental in promoting the importance of the association and was a persuasive advocate for key suppliers to become more involved in promoting authorized distribution. McNally praised his genuine sense of optimism and ability to find the positive in every situation and to strive for win-win solutions.

In accepting the award, Gallagher stressed how the industry was based on trust and relationships and noted the importance and value of each. He spoke of the rewards of his involvement in NEDA and called on others to make the most of their NEDA membership.

Avnet: A Computer Company Culture

MaryAnn Miller

As seen in As seen in Talent Management -- Avnet's performance management approach builds from a strong foundation in the company's core values.

MaryAnn Miller, the chief human resources officer at Avnet Inc., notes with pride that her company doesn't need to advertise to attract top talent.

"We think that our company reputation will attract the kind of people who share the same values that Avnet has, and that's worked for us, given that we're No. 144 on the Fortune 500 list," said Miller, who services the HR needs of approximately 12,000 employees at Avnet, a distributor of computer products, embedded systems, semiconductors, interconnects, passives, electromechanical, RF and microwave components. "Our practices around HR are becoming more and more known, and so we don't invest a lot in advertising. We seem to get the most action out of our employees referring others to Avnet as a place to work and people doing their own research and understanding Avnet's prevalence as an employer."

Gaining perspective

Roy Vallee

As seen in EDN -- On a global scale, economists have been comparing the current downturn to the Great Depression. The electronics industry's last worst downturn was in 2000–2001. Industry experts say the current recession will certainly distinguish itself from the rest—and drive further change in the supply chain.

"If we compare this with 2001," says Michael Long, CEO of Arrow Electronics Inc., Melville, NY, "that downturn didn't affect banking to the level it has this time. There was still access to capital—it was easier to borrow so you could continue to run your business. This time banking led the downturn and money has dried up. This effect has moved into the supply chain—people are buying only what they need to manufacture. Back in the tech wreck, [demand] dropped off a cliff."

Executives point out that the supply chain itself contributed to the 2001 downturn by vastly overestimating demand. This time, however, the industry is part of the collateral damage caused by a meltdown in global finance as well as overinflated real estate values. All this has trickled down to consumers as well as businesses. "In this downturn, this industry has been somewhat of a spectator—watching the impact to our business due to economics beyond our control," says Jennifer Bleakney, vice president for Santa Clara, Calif.-based National Semiconductor Corp. Worldwide Distribution and Customer Support. "We aren't passive spectators in the sense we are sitting back and watching a game being played that we have no control over—the industry is managing through the downturn. Collateral damage is what's left behind and what we have to put back together, and that will require a significant amount of collaboration."
