Avnet Acquires Controlling Interest in Vanda Group
KP Tang | As seen in Consumer Infoline, India -- Avnet has announced that it has, with effect from October 5, 2009, acquired a controlling interest in Vanda Group from Hutchinson Whampoa Limited, expanding its presence and customer base across China. Founded in 1982, Vanda Group is a leading IT solutions and services provider covering major cities in China, Hong Kong and Macau.
Vanda Group provides systems integration services and solutions incorporating hardware and software from major suppliers including IBM, Lenovo, Cisco, SUN, Nokia and Oracle. With more than 600 employees and nine major offices across China plus Hong Kong and Macau, Vanda Group provides leading edge technologies and solutions to clients from diverse industries including major banks, financial institutions, telecommunications companies, utilities and government departments. In 2008, Vanda Group revenue was approximately US$50 million. Vanda Group will operate as an Avnet company while maintaining its current operations, management team and the Vanda brand.
KP Tang, president of Avnet Technology Solutions, Asia Pacific, noted that this investment is a significant step in expanding Avnet’s business in the China market: “Adding a recognized leader like the Vanda Group will allow us to expand into new markets in Hong Kong and Macau while complementing our recently launched value-add distribution business in China. With Vanda’s strong local brand and technical resources we will be able to leverage the strengths of both organizations to address additional growth opportunities in greater China.”

A design sign of the times: Distributors boost technical support offerings
Roy Vallee | As seen in EDN -- Even with an improving economy, the pressure to do more with less continues to transform the electronics design chain. Cost constraints are driving component makers to focus only on their strongest or most profitable technologies. Competitive pressures are steering engineers toward high-performance—but low-cost—design solutions. Although it appears the design chain is streamlining, the exact opposite is true. While engineers can cherry pick among their suppliers’ best technology offerings, integrating these devices into a cost-effective product design takes more—rather than less—time and effort.
“Designers used to be able to go to one source if they had questions or issues with a design,” said Roy Vallee, CEO of Phoenix-based distributor Avnet Inc. Suppliers—such as the Motorola, National Semiconductor, or Philips of a decade ago—used to offer a suite of products or technologies designed to work together. “Now, as suppliers focus on a single technology, [designers] have to go to their analog guy, memory guy, ASIC guy, and everyone else to solve a design problem,” explained Vallee. And, while suppliers provide technical support for their own devices, they don’t necessarily see a customer’s entire design, said Michael Long, CEO of Melville, NY-based Arrow Electronics Inc. Designers could spend hours online or make a dozen phone calls to resolve a simple compatibility or integration issue.
Combined with shortening product lifecycles and tight OEM profit margins, “these forces are putting a lot of pressure on designers’ cost and time,” Vallee said.
Distributors are seizing this opportunity to showcase one of their core competencies: providing a one-stop shop for a variety of components and technologies. Even though the channel has cut personnel during the recession, distributors are retaining and even making select investments in applications engineers, Web tools, technical training seminars, and other types of design assistance. “Technical competence is going to be one of the major trends shaping the distribution channel as we move forward,” said Vallee.

Avnet recognized for improving data-center efficiency
Steve Phillips | As seen in Electronics Advocate -- Phoenix, Ariz. — Avnet, Inc., a leading global technology distributor, was named an Honoree in Storage Networking World’s (SNW) “Best Practices in Storage” Awards Program, which acknowledges excellence among users of storage IT solutions. Avnet was also recognized in the “Green Computing, Energy Efficiency and the Data Center” category based on the redesign of its data center to decrease power consumption, primarily due to server and storage virtualization.
As a result of the data center revamp, Avnet’s IT team expanded its data center operations while avoiding millions of dollars in power build out and raised floor expansion. As an example, Avnet moved from a local storage-based strategy with many storage devices to a virtualized environment with multi-tiered SAN and NAS. In total, Avnet was able to consolidate hundreds of storage devices.
“As both a distributor and a user of technology, Avnet understands the profound impact that virtualization can have on an organization,” said Steve Phillips, chief information officer, Avnet, Inc., in a statement.
