Distributors stay afloat during this downturn
 |
| Victor Koh |
As seen in ECN Asia -- The financial crisis is spreading across every corner of the economy and the electronics industry is not exempted. Forward Concepts reported that DSP shipment in November 2008 was off by a whopping 49 percent. Thankfully the distributors, an increasingly important link among the industry value chain after the bubble-burst in 2001, are becoming more intelligent in managing the inventory and supply chain. However, it is difficult to forecast the future due to market uncertainty. ECNA spoke to Victor Koh, Regional President, Avnet Memec China, regarding the status of China’s electronics market and how distributors can meet clients’ requirements in these hard times. Excerpts:What are the best strategies OEMs can adopt to stay competitive in this downturn?
The financial turmoil is certainly affecting China's economy and its electronics industry. However, the current crisis also offers OEM enterprises an opportunity to examine and readjust their product portfolios and improve enterprise management.
The positive economic climate in the past few years allowed companies to relax on their vigilance, and in some cases this has resulted in lax corporate management and poor cost control. As the impact of the financial crisis becomes clear, companies should strengthen their human resources management and finances, and streamline their structures in order to enhance productivity.

Avnet Express launches new bill of materials tool
 |
| Beth Ely |
As seen in Purchasing -- Avnet Express, part of Avnet Electronics Marketing, has launched an enhanced bill of materials (BOM) tool that gives buyers the ability to search multiple parts simultaneously and retrieve pricing and stock availability information.
"Avnet's BOM upload tool is the result of a collaborative effort with our customers," says Beth Ely, senior vice president of Avnet Express. It was built to provide easy access to the services and information customers find valuable and allows them to save the links to that information for use after they leave the site.
The BOM upload tool allows buyers to convert a spreadsheet of desired part numbers into a working BOM, which can then be saved, exported back to a spreadsheet, or e-mailed to anyone else on their team.
In addition to generating a list of matching parts and providing pricing and availability, the search results also provide technical data and alternative part suggestions.

Avnet Unveils Video On Demand Portal
As seen in TMCnet.com -- May 04, 2009 (Close-Up Media via COMTEX) -- Avnet, Inc. announced the launch of Avnet OnDemand, a video portal for the technology distribution industry featuring a broad range of videos from Avnet and technology manufacturers.
Avnet OnDemand showcases videos featuring new products, hot trends, services and technical tutorials - all in one place.
Research from comScore estimates that more than 145 million people watch online video each month, up 8 percent from a year ago. Avnet OnDemand leverages the growing interest in online video for business purposes, offering a combination of video content.
The video portal offers viewers a choice of component or computing channels, designed specifically to meet the needs of design engineers and value-added resellers. The portal aggregates video content into one convenient location so users don't have to search multiple sites to find information relevant to their needs. In addition to technical product information, the site provides training and general information videos and in the future can provide live video broadcast feeds from industry trade shows, seminars and meetings.

An enduring global design role
 |
| Ed Smith |
As seen in EE Times -- Smith was appointed head of Avnet Inc.'s component distribution business for the Americas in February, in the thick of a sharp global economic and electronics market downturn that is still playing out.
Smith, an industry veteran with roots in both the distribution and contract manufacturing markets, is convinced North America's role as a major design center for electronics remains guaranteed, despite the shift in production to Asia and other lower-cost centers in eastern Europe.
It's a view held by many in the industry, despite signs that more equipment vendors in the PC, telecommunications and networking equipment markets are stepping up hiring of design engineers in Asia, in addition to establishing research centers in the region. Those shifts are taking place even as manufacturing continues to move offshore.
In response, companies like Avnet are leveraging design expertise in North America to grab design businesses in Asia. Rather than fight the shift in manufacturing to Asia, they are helping OEMs achieve their design goals by furnishing required expertise in the Americas and then using the advantages offered by technology innovations to transmit and monitor production in manufacturing plants. The development is good news for Smith, who is overseeing one of Avnet's key profit and revenue centers and must keep the momentum going through a difficult downturn.

Global CIO: How Avnet Is Rethinking IT To Enable Global Business
 |
| Steve Phillips |
As seen in InformationWeek -- Three years ago, global technology distributor Avnet began examining the structure of our IT team to determine the best way to continue focusing on the regional needs of our business, while also gaining global scale and enabling our global initiatives. Our regional businesses and IT leaders met and found that each regional business wanted direct access to an IT team that understood the uniqueness of its market and regional business goals. However, we also agreed that we wanted IT applications and capabilities to support the increasingly global nature of the markets Avnet operates in. Additionally, we wanted to take greater advantage of the economies of scale and consolidated purchasing power of Avnet's global reach across more than 70 countries.
We decided that moving from regionally based IT teams to a unified, global IT team that will ultimately become integrated with the business' organizational structure would strike the right balance. It's important to point out that we don't look on this as "alignment" -- I believe IT leaders are leaving the alignment debate behind and moving toward making IT professionals a part of a singular business team. That broader move from regional to global IT teams allowed us to remain responsive to regional market needs while gaining the benefits of our global scale. Let's take a look at those key initiatives of working in close concert with the business, and operational excellence.

Some real-world adventures in LED lighting design
 |
| Cary Eskow |
As seen in EDN -- Ron Wilson, EDN’s executive editor, whose regular beat is Practical Chip Design, covered the morning keynote at EDN’s Designing with LEDs Workshop.
Keynoting the EDN Designing with LEDs workshop last week, Cary Eskow, director of Lightspeed-Avnet Electronics Marketing, conducted a quick, edge-of-the-chair tour through the world of LED lighting. Surveying issues and applications, Eskow began in a light socket and ended in a colon.
Eskow started by describing series of interlocking dilemmas. On one hand, he said, US Title 24 regulations require efficient lighting in new structures. And regulations are even stricter in much of the rest of the world—Eskow described the US as almost the last refuge of the incandescent lamp. But while compact florescent lamps (CFLs) have rushed to meet Title 24 requirements, they have run directly into Title 22: a separate regulation that states anything with Mercury content—including CFLs—must be treated as hazardous waste when they are dumped. This Catch-22, Eskow said, opened the door for LED lighting in many applications for which it might otherwise be too expensive.
But then comes another dilemma. Eskow observed that most lighting fixture vendors are basically metal-benders. They are not sophisticated in electronics, and they are used to thinking outside the box in terms of interior design, not electronics design. The speaker worried that these vendors might not see the real opportunities in LED technology, and so would be reduced to differentiating their products on price, not features.
