Avnet to buy NDI for foothold in Japanese electronics parts market

As seen in Tech-On, Japan -- Avnet Inc, a US trading firm and major distributor of electronics parts, announced that it has entered into an agreement to acquire Nippon Denso Industry Co Ltd (NDI).

Avnet will acquire 100% of the shares in NDI through its Japanese arm Avnet Japan Co Ltd and incorporate NDI in Avnet Japan. The acquisition price was not disclosed. Transfer of the shares will be completed by Dec 29, 2008. Avnet Japan had a press conference to explain the acquisition on Dec 2, 2008.

Avnet intends to expand its technical support and services in the Japanese market. Its sales in Japan will be doubled after this acquisition, according to Avnet. Yukio Kawabata, president and CEO of NDI, will serve as a member of the executive management team of Avnet Japan.

As seen in EDN -- Cary Eskow is director of LightSpeed, the solid-state-lighting- and LED (light-emitting-diode)-business unit of Avnet Electronics Marketing. A 28-year Avnet veteran, he leads Avnet’s national team of illumination-focused engineers experienced in thermal, drive-stage, and optics design and has worked closely with LED manufacturers, advanced analog IC, and secondary optics vendors since receiving his first patent using LEDs two decades ago. He has published more than 30 articles and columns on HB-LED (high-brightness LED)-system design and is a member of the Underwriters Laboratory-8750 LED Standards Technical Panel. Eskow recently spoke to EDN about designing for the HB-LED market. Excerpts of that interview follow.

As seen in Business Journal of Phoenix -- What does sustainability mean to you? “Making our planet environmentally safe and productive for future generations.”

What is your business doing to be sustainable? “We have worked with our customers and suppliers within the electronics industry on eliminating lead issues for years. Our European team led the awareness and education initiatives in the technology sector on this European Union-mandated issue. Avnet is in the early stages of formalizing its green policies. We are in the process of either doing or reviewing car policies, travel, meeting activities, facility enhancements, freight, and working with our suppliers to educate customers on how they can be more green by using creative solutions or products such as LED lighting.”

How has your business benefited from implementing those practices? “In morale, it’s a matter of pride and a sense of community our employees have embraced that conveys how much we want to be good citizens. We will continue to educate and look for areas to improve — yes, in small ways, like phasing out Styrofoam cups in our cafe and break rooms, and incorporating green practices in a new building in Chandler we just opened, where energy efficiency is an easy win, with sensors for lighting. And just turning off computers at night can save over $100,000. My favorite programs were eliminating water bottles at large meetings. At one held here, we saved $10,000 and we also had a local company take our extra food to shelters.”

Avnet looks to Cisco to ramp up networking

As seen in CRN UK -- Avnet is hoping to strengthen ties with key vendors in 2009 and has identified Cisco as a primary target.

According to chief executive Roy Vallee, the distributor has deep relationships with key vendors across the globe and will be working with them to expand into new regions. But Cisco is the missing link, he said.

“If you look at where we have come – evolving storage, software and servers in the datacentre – and look at where the technology is leading to in the converged communications space, we need to grow our networking business. There are several relationships that we are working on expanding globally,” said Vallee.

“But the one that is missing is Cisco, and that has to be fixed. We know it wants to keep its distribution limited, but this is a matter of looking for the right opportunity.”

Vallee added that the distributor does work with Cisco, but is keen to formalise the relationship.

Keith Humphreys, managing consultant at analyst Eurolan, said: “It is a missing link and it might be the place that Cisco needs a distributor such as Avnet would be in the datacentre sector. Whether or not Cisco would sign up another distributor remains to be seen.”
