Avnet creates business innovation executive position

| Greg Frazier | As seen in EDN -- Avnet Inc has created a new position that will cross its Electronics Marketing (EM) and Technology Solutions (TS) operating groups and will focus on business innovation and advancement.
In doing so, the Phoenix-based distributor has promoted Greg Frazier as executive VP, business innovation. In this new role, Frazier will be responsible for driving growth through business innovation for both of Avnet’s operating groups and will report jointly to the leaders of each group: Harley Feldberg, president, Avnet EM, and John Paget, president, Avnet TS.
“In the distribution industry, people think there’s not a lot new there, that the gains you make in the distribution industry are very iterative, that you are always striving to get better. What we want to look at with this position is doing things differently as an adjunct to doing them better,” Frazier said.
Key to the position will be Avnet’s new “profitable growth through structured innovation” program. Starting with its management teams, the company will review and explore with its employees such topics as ideation, brain storming, business planning, and the different elements of creating a new business.

Avnet Technology Solutions looks to solution-based sales for resellers, consultants

| Gavin Miller | As seen in The Channel Insider -- Avnet Technology Solutions has formed a new organization, Technology Infrastructure Solutions, which combines Avnet's Enterprise Software and Storage business with the Technology and Market Solutions business to better serve resellers, VARs and consultants. Gavin Miller has been appointed to head the new group and plans to leverage a more solutions-oriented approach to helping resellers and consultants build sales.
Avnet's IT distribution arm, Technology Solutions, has promoted Gavin Miller, a former solution provider, as vice president and general manager of the company's new organization, Technology Infrastructure Solutions.
The newly formed organization combines Avnet's Enterprise Software and Storage business with the Technology and Market Solutions business. In his new role, Miller reports to Jeff Bawol who was appointed as president of Avnet Technology Solutions, Americas, in May.

| Roy Vallee | As seen in Industrial Distribution -- Roy Vallee is celebrating his 10th anniversary as CEO of Avent Inc., the global distributor of electronic components and technology solutions with sales of nearly $18 billion last year. Elec-tronic components make up nearly 58 percent of Avnet’s business, yielding $10.3 billion in sales in 2008; technology solutions comprise the remainder of the business, pulling in $7.6 bil-lion in 2008.
ID spoke to Vallee in August to learn more about the electronics distribution market and how it compares to the industrial sector. What follows are excerpts from our conversation.
Industrial Distribution: Avnet had record sales in fiscal year 2008. What key factors con-tributed to those results?
Roy Vallee: In order of impact, the top issue was M&A, another big factor for this year was currency and the third thing was organic market share gains—just good execution by our team throughout the world.
ID: As a global company, is Avnet seeing strength in any one particular part of the world? Are there any “stand-out” markets?
Vallee: This probably comes as no surprise, but Asia is by far our fastest growth region. What you might find interesting [is that] in America, in our components business, we had been experiencing slightly negative growth, [but] starting in December and continuing through [the] March and June quarters we saw a return to single-digit organic growth rates. The weakest region has been Europe. …
In terms of stand-out markets, the way it looks to us [is that] emerging markets in general are where the highest growth rates are. When you couple emerging markets with a relatively large economy, you get the highest impact. The first finger points to China (including Taiwan); places like India are growing at a nice rate, [as well as] Eastern Europe.
