Avnet's Harley Feldberg: Distribution evolution
 |
| Harley Feldberg | As seen in EDN -- Electronic Business recently spoke with Harley Feldberg, president of Avnet Electronics Marketing, about the company's June quarter, how Avnet buffered the economy, the lack of organic growth in the distribution market and the new M&A structure that has encouraged, what impact the Olympics will have on business in Asia, plus the changing inventory models that make up the modern day electronics supply chain. What follows are excerpts of the conversation.
Electronic Business: Avnet faced a lot of challenges in the last quarter and last fiscal year overall, but still showed solid performance, especially on the Electronics Marketing (EM) side, which saw revenue of $2.73 billion, up nearly 11% sequentially in its June fiscal Q4 on better-than-expected sales from all three of its regions. Let's talk about how Avnet EM buffered the economy.
Feldberg: The market continues to be a difficult one, but we are starting to really gain some significant traction in a focus we've really been pushing in the last couple of years, which is trying to move a bit up the value chain. That's not meant to suggest that we are not still a very significant, active fulfillment distributor, but I think what you would find, if you went out and interviewed most of the large suppliers that we represent, is that we really have taken a leadership position in demand creation [using distributor-supplied suites of engineering services to encourage product training and guidance].

Avnet's Roy Vallee: Staying constant in a world of change
 |
| Roy Vallee | As seen in Electronic Business -- Thirty-one years ago, Roy Vallee joined a little company known as Hamilton/Avnet as a field sales representative. After subsequent promotions and decades of growth, Vallee in July celebrated 10 years at the helm of electronics supply chain giant Avnet Inc, one of the world's largest companies with revenue exceeding $17.95 billion. Electronic Business recently spoke with Avnet's CEO and chairman about what the electronics distribution industry was, what it is, and what it will be. What follows are excerpts of that conversation.
Electronic Business: How would you describe Avnet and the distribution landscape 10 years ago?
Vallee: Ten years ago was pre bubble. From our point of view the semiconductor industry was still more cyclical and volatile. We were largely a North American company but had begun expanding in Europe and had just stuck our toe in the water in Asia. Nearly all of our previous CEOs had been founders. I got the CEO promotion and was just hired help. A lot of the acquisitions were not fully integrated, we didn't have a global culture, operations were scattered about. Just domestically, we were in California, Atlanta, New England, and New York.

Q&A: Avnet Technology Solutions goes vertical
 |
| John Paget | As seen in Computer Dealer News -- Colorado Springs – During this year's annual Avnet New Frontiers conference, held here for the specialty distributor's Sun Microsystems (NASDAQ: JAVA) partners, Avnet Technology Solutions Americas (NYSE: AVT) executives said that solutions in the virtualization, unified communications (UC), network security and storage spaces are all key to the distributor's distribution strategy moving forward.
To help keep pace with specific solutions and market segments, Avnet Technology Solutions, an operating group of Avnet Inc., last month launched VirtualPath University for its VARs. In addition to VirtualPath, Avnet also has offers its partners HealthPath University and GovPath University, which are each three-day training sessions that focus on the healthcare and government industries. While GovPath is only available in the U.S., both VirtualPath and HealthPath are available in the U.S. and Canada. The training schools fall under what Avnet calls its SolutionsPath methodology, which enable partners to target one of three markets.
CDN recently had a chance to speak with John Paget, president of Avnet Technology Solutions, Global, about the new Avnet training, specific areas of growth, rising fuel costs and company plans for 2009 and beyond.
