High spirits on the Horizon

| Matthew Gower | As seen in CRN, UK -- The biggest challenge in any takeover is maintaining staff morale and retaining key people during the crucial integration period.
For Avnet, which has made four acquisitions in the past 18 months, its recent €98.5m takeover of Anglo-Irish distributor Horizon Technology was no mean feat (CRN, 7 July). Horizon itself had made a number of acquisitions before Avnet came on the scene, and was split into several different business units.
However, the message from both businesses is that keeping hold of talent is key and the integration of the two firms is not something that will be done in a hurry.
Indeed it is business as usual for each side, with Horizon retaining its name and operating as a separate business unit for the time being, and a special integration committee has been formed to analyse the company going forward.
Matthew Gower, vice president of Avnet Technology Solutions for the UK and Nordics, is heading up the process.

Avnet adds Agilent CEO to board

| William P. Sullivan | As seen in EDN -- Avnet Inc has named William P Sullivan, president and CEO of Agilent Technologies Inc, to its board of directors replacing, James A Lawrence, CFO of Unilever PLC.
“We are delighted to welcome Mr. Sullivan to the Avnet board,” Roy Vallee, Avnet’s chairman and CEO, said in a statement Wednesday. “His knowledge of the technology industry and hands-on experience running a global organization will benefit Avnet as we continue to grow.”
Sullivan has served as the president and CEO of test giant Agilent since March 2005. He served as executive VP and COO of Agilent from March 2002 until March 2005, and as its senior VP and general manager of its semiconductor products group from August 1999 until March 2002.

A Partnership Built on Faith
As seen in Industrial Distribution -- In today’s global economy, it’s almost a given that electronic products are primarily manufactured in Asia, then sold in the United States and Europe. Microboard Processing Inc., now in its 25th year, is bucking that trend.
MPI is an electronics manufacturer located in Seymour, Conn., a New England mill town that has seen its share of industries rise and fall. We started in 1983 as a small, family-owned electronics repair services business. Since then, the company has evolved to become the largest electronics manufacturing services provider in the state.
It wasn’t always easy. In the early days, like many young companies, MPI was strapped for cash, particularly the funds needed to invest in inventory. Bank lending was costly then (if available at all), so we turned to our electronics distributors for assistance. It was a valuable early lesson for us: Choose partners who had faith in us and in whom we could have faith.
