| Beth Ely | As seen in Purchasing -- Avnet Express, the small order division of Avnet Electronics Marketing, has added more functionality to its website that provides more information about parts to buyers and engineers.
The new site is designed to help customers “choose parts wisely,” says Beth Ely, senior vice president new channel development for Avnet Electronics Marketing.
Most distributor websites have part search functionality. Buyers can plug in a part number and see if it is in stock, or they can use a component characteristic or specification and the search engine will identify parts that match the criteria.
Avnet Express’ website has that functionality, but also provides a variety of information about the components, says Ely. Much of the information centers on supply issues.

I suppose it happens, especially if the company had been failing. But more often, the employees are left to absorb the acquisition news, feeling like the girl in period dramas being told about an arranged marriage:
"Good news, dear: You're getting married."
"Married? To whom?"
And the answer is never that the bridegroom is the dreamy romantic who's been sneaking up the balcony; no, it's the dull but wealthy guy who doesn't notice sunsets or is allergic to kittens.

New system endorsed by MIIT to counter fake electronic components in China

| Victor Koh | As seen in ASMag.com, Taiwan -- Avnet Electronics Marketing (EM), an operating group of the leading global distributor of electronic components and computer products, Avnet, Inc. (NYSE: AVT), has been granted certification under China's newly-implemented Reliable Electronic Component Suppliers (RECS) system.
Avnet Electronics Marketing China is one of the first authorized electronics distributors to be qualified under the RECS system, which is endorsed by The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), and is supported by the China Quality Management Association for the Electronics Industry (CQAE) and the China Electronic Purchasing Association (CEPA).
The RECS system certifies and authenticates electronic component manufacturers and authorized distributors who provide products from legal and reliable sources. RECS was established in response to a growing trend of counterfeit products in China and is designed to promote legitimate product sources and educate China electronic purchasers to buy from reliable sources of electronics components while ensuring the reliability and traceability of product sources.

Partner, customer—or both?

Phil Gallagher is right when he says the “customer vs. partner” debate is one both sides would do well to ponder. But it needs to be done from a completely different direction, because we’ve all been getting it backwards for so many years. Actually, manufacturers are the distributors’ customers, a real role reversal, and distributors are part of the manufacturers’ sales and marketing organization—not their customer, but a part of their organization.
However, I disagree with Marshall Jones when he says distributors and manufacturers don’t want to be partners. Deep down, they both really believe they want and need to be partners because they’ve been taught that a partnership is a good thing even though there will be tension.
