Avnet launches Intel Atom development tool for embedded systems
As seen in EDN -- The Avnet Electronics Marketing Americas business region of Avnet Inc has released its first board level Intel Architecture development tool, featuring the Intel Atom processor, for embedded applications.
The Intel D945GCLF Convenience Kit is currently available to customers throughout North America.
The Intel Atom family was officially branded by Intel in March and entered the electronics supply chain in April. Intel has since reported a supply squeeze on the Atom, noting higher-than-expected demand for the low-power, small footprint chips targeted at the high-growth MID (mobile Internet device) and UMPC (ultra mobile PC) markets.
“We are excited about the Atom processor family and the opportunity in the embedded marketplace this new development tool from Avnet will help us to realize,” said Eric Thompson, director of North American channel sales and marketing for Intel, in a statement today.
According to Avnet EM, the Intel D945GCLF kit allows users to rapidly write and test software around an Intel embedded architecture platform. Avnet EM is targeting the kit at embedded engineers, system architects, hardware design, and software engineers in the medical, industrial, transportation, kiosk, security, test and measurement, defense, and instrumentation sectors. The Phoenix-based company noted that the kit comes ready to use, equipped with motherboard, memory, storage, operating system, and power supply in a pre-assembled chassis.
“This is a great commercial off-the-shelf solution for customers looking to meet stringent time to market requirements and decrease development costs for their embedded applications,” said Marc Gsand, VP of marketing for Avnet EM Americas, in the statement. “Designers will benefit from the proven Intel technology as well as development support provided by Avnet’s factory trained and certified field application engineers.”

Avnet and HP join in new channel storage offering
As seen in ITChannel Planet -- In another move that strengthens the managed services market for VARs, distributor Avnet Technology Solutions and HP Electronic Vaulting Services are marketing an off-site managed storage offering to mid-sized business customers.
Executives with Avnet said the new service will allow HP-authorized VARs to build a revenue stream among mid-sized companies in vertical markets such as healthcare, financial services and government that require significant amounts of offsite, secure data backup and recovery support. The storage solution, which carries a monthly fee, can be customized to meet individual customers' needs, lessening the need for a large, up-front capital investment.
"This is the first storage offering in which Avnet has partnered with HP," said Charles Babb, vice president of Avnet managed technologies. "This is a secure solution that could replace tape storage." Members of Avnet's reseller advisory council were pushing Avnet to provide such a managed service solution, he added.
Babb said that VARs will need to undergo a day or so of technical and sales training from Avnet to market the HP Electronic Vaulting Services solution effectively. It provides local and remote back-up for a monthly charge tailored to the volume of compressed data. That approach makes the solution especially cost-effective for mid-size users.
Budget constraints often cause companies to back up data to their primary storage systems or to another system in the same location. However, such strategies offer no protection or recovery from equipment failure, site failure, physical security breach or local environmental disaster. With the partnership among Avnet, HP and the channel, customers will be able to satisfy their critical back-up and recovery requirements within an operating expense budget and without the capital investment required to equip a remote site.
