CEO of Distributor Avnet Sees Chip Industry on the Rebound

Roy Vallee
As seen in Investor’s Business Daily
-- Roy Vallee, chief executive of electronics distributor Avnet, (AVT) says the chip industry is starting an up cycle — a view that seems to run counter to current statistics and the outlook of the sector's main trade group.

But as middleman in the distribution chain, Avnet  gets a good view of the chip industry.

The company sells chips and other computer parts and systems to computer and consumer electronics makers.

Last year, chip companies built too many chips. They had to cut prices to get rid of a chip glut. But Vallee says the latest chip industry boom-and-bust cycle has played itself out.

Avnet Taps VMWare for its Virtualization Consolidation Practice

Jack Morris
As seen in CMP Channel
-- Avnet announced on Tuesday that it has teamed up with virtualization market leader VMWare, expanding its Virtualization and Consolidation Solutions Practice group and its relationship with the vendor.

The Phoenix, Ariz.-based distributor will configure and sell solutions to its reseller customers that integrate the full line of VMWare's virtualization software with server and storage products from IBM, Hewlett Packard and Sun.

Avnet previously sold a limited menu of VMWare's software, but through its OEM relationships with IBM and HP, said Jack Morris, vice president, Avnet Technology Solutions, Americas.

The move gives Avnet's consolidation and virtualization practice a foundation upon which to build itself as virtualization becomes more common, said Morris. "This helps us solidify and gives us a nice partner to anchor that practice. It ties very, very well within our server focus as well as our storage focus. I think this is going to be an underpinning of all of the solution sets we're going to be deploying in the future."

Distributors Offer More Design Services

Marc Gsand
As seen in Purchasing
-- Lean design staffs, shrinking time to market and the need to lower costs are among the reasons that electronics more often are choosing distributors who offer design expertise.

Buyers find that design support from distributors varies widely. Larger distributors offer soup-to-nuts menus of design services. Other distributors may offer advice on a limited number of parts. Many distributors have field application engineers (FAEs) who provide technical advice about components. Others offer application specific integrated circuit (ASIC) and field programmable gate array (FPGA) design expertise. A few have design centers staffed by engineers who are experts on specific vertical markets. Some large distributors have partnered with design houses to provide complex design services to OEMs.

Distributors say that many OEMs are looking for a total design solution rather than advice on which individual part is a good fit for a certain application.

Seoul Semiconductor Signs European and Asian Deals with Avnet
Stephen Wong and Miguel Fernandez
As seen in LEDs Magazine
-- LED manufacturer Seoul Semiconductor has signed European and Asian distribution agreements with Avnet Electronics Marketing, a division of Avnet Inc, to expand and reinforce its sales network.

The agreements followed an announcement made in January for Avnet to distribute Seoul Semiconductor’s products in the North American market (see - Seoul Semiconductor and Avnet sign distribution agreement).

The agreements provide Seoul Semiconductor's customers with solution-centered support and quicker delivery via Avnet's inventory. As well as supplying LED products, Avnet will provide technical support services that will enable the integration of Seoul Semiconductor’s technology into customers’ actual applications, saving time and money. Miguel Fernandez, president of Silica, a division of Avnet Electronics Marketing EMEA, said: “Seoul Semiconductor’s broad range of advanced LED technology will revolutionize many segments of the lighting industry and is therefore a valuable addition to our existing portfolio.”
