Avnet Wins AMD's Distributor of the Year 2006 Award for Asia Pacific
As seen in Electronic Technology, China -- Avnet Technology Solutions, Asia, an operating group of Avnet, Inc., announced that its Computing Components business unit was recently recognized as AMD's top-performing global distributor for 2006. Avnet Computing Components is the channel's leading source globally for AMD technology, and was also honored Avnet as Distributor of the Year for the Asia Pacific, Europe and North America regions. This marks the fourth consecutive year that Avnet achieved the No. 1 global distribution position for AMD products.

Distributors see India as a growth driver
As seen in Purchasing -- While many distributors are focusing on China and Europe, some see India as the next hotbed for electronics distribution because Indian OEMs have a history of using distributors rather than buying direct.

"In late 1990s and in 2000, most semiconductors sold in India went through distributors,” says Kamath Suresh, general manager of sales for Avnet Electronics Marketing Asia. “Suppliers did not have a presence in India and did not see business growing there. There was no concept of direct customers. “Everything was through distribution," he says.

Over the last three years that has changed a bit and some semiconductor and component manufacturers have started to set up offices in India. Still only about 5-10% of the component business has shifted from distribution to component manufacturers, according to Suresh.

X-Fest FPGA/DSP seminars receive high marks

As seen in Programmable Logic DesignLine -- Avnet Electronics Marketing and Xilinx have reported extremely positive feedback from design engineers, managers, and system architects attending their global X-Fest technical seminars. The companies say that attendees overwhelmingly agree on the value of the highly technical content and focused workshops. X-Fest, a series of technical seminars offering practical, how-to training around system level design for FPGA, DSP and embedded systems designers, runs worldwide through July 13 in locations throughout Europe, Asia, Japan and North America.

The companies recently kicked off their North American series in Salt Lake City. By series end, X-Fest will have visited 90 cities worldwide.

TriQuint extends its agreement with Avnet Memec

-- TriQuint Semiconductor extends its distribution agreement with Avnet Memec to include UK, Ireland, France and Italy. Avnet Memec is now the sole TriQuint distributor on a pan-European basis with the exception of Iberia.

Built around 14 software-centric solutions based on IBM technology, these solutions include not only the hardware and software, but also the marketing, sales and services resources.

"The intent of the Think Solutions initiative is to get in, really understand the marketplace and provide them with a solution that is a bundle, but that can be modified and customized," said Avnet VP Fred Cuen. "At the end of the day we're trying to provide partners with the hardware, software and services solutions that solve customer needs."
