Vehicle Profile: 2017 Kia Rio and Rio 5
A stylish, substantial subcompact

Substantial yet inexpensive, the 2017 Kia Rio and Rio 5 prove you donít need to spend a lot of money to get style and good fuel economy without sacrificing all of the features you care about.

Whether you prefer the four-door sedan or five-door hatchback, the 2017 Kia Rio offers great value. The base LX trim gets power-adjustable heated side mirrors and a six-way adjustable driverís seat as well as a four-speaker stereo with USB and satellite radio. Upgrading to the EX trim gets you Bluetooth wireless technology and cruise control, while opting for the top-of-the-line SX makes the Rio and Rio 5 feel positively luxurious, with heated leather seats, a power moonroof, a rearview camera and a 7-inch color touchscreen UVO infotainment system making up just part of the long list of amenities.

Regardless of trim, the 2017 Kia Rio and Rio 5 are both powered by a 1.6-liter inline four-cylinder engine that makes 138 horsepower and 123 lb-ft of torque, which is ample grunt when you factor in that the little subcompact only weighs just above 2,500 pounds.

The engine is paired with a six-speed manual on the base LX and a six-speed automatic on the EX and SX, though city and highway fuel economy is identical for both. An optional Idle Stop & Go feature is also available on the EX, which cuts the engine at spotlights to increase your mileage and decrease your emissions.

Part of what helps the 2017 Kia Rio and Rio 5 stand out from the competition is what helps it stand out literally: its style. Whether itís the four-door sedan or the five-door hatchback, the Kia Rio is a head-turner that takes after the likes of the trendsetting Kia Optima. Where previous models were softer and bubblier, the new Kio Rio makes a more striking appearance with chiseled features and details, from the signature Tigernose grille and available 17-inch wheels to its muscular beltline and sporty, planted stance.

The subcompact segment is often associated with cheap-feeling cars that cut out all the things that matter for the sake of cost-saving. The 2017 Kia Rio and Rio 5 challenge that notion by being not just affordable but also substantial, with power, features and style you would normally expect to have to spend much more to get.
