Emerald Cities: Arts of Siam & Burma
Closes January 10, 2010
Did you know our conservators spent 7,500 hours restoring the artworks in this exhibition to their current bedazzling state? Emerald Cities is the first exhibition outside Asia to explore the rich but little known arts of nineteenth-century Siam and Burma. Stunning artworks include furniture, paintings, textiles, and more – many were acquired by the museum from the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation and are on display for the first time ever.The Asian Art Museum is the exclusive venue. Photographic Memories Closes January 17, 2010
The second installation of this display highlights photographs from the museum’s holdings. 41 pictures on view –– most dating from 1850-1910 –– reflect people's lives in Asia and record the travels people took there – or would like to have taken. Subjects range from portraits of princes to picturesque views of landscapes and palaces.

AsiaAlive: Thai Mask Painting
Tuesday-Sunday, November 3-8, 12:00 noon–4:00 pm
FREE with museum admission
In Thai performing arts, costumes with richly gilded crowns and colorful masks help convey the gestures and meanings in dance. Artist Jakaraphan Paypai from Thailand will show how he creates intricate patterns and colors on papier mache masks using paint, gold leaves, and colored glass.

Enjoy performances from the puppeteers of the Mandalay Marionettes Theatre, here in a rare appearance from Burma. Himalayan adventures, love stories, and dance are vividly animated by incredibly life-like, articulate puppets. Far from being an isolated series of events, the development of European architecture was seminally shaped by contact with the East. In this talk, Ms. Al-Alusi will give us a broad overview of the history of Western art and architecture, paying special attention to the global flows and Eastern influences that shaped the Western aesthetic.

More than a thousand years ago, Southeast Asian kingdoms adapted aspects of Indian classical culture, from Hinduism and Buddhism to mythology, astronomy, and royal ceremonies. Nineteenth-century Siam and Burma were no exception. An example of this adaption, the epic of Rama is one of the most important subjects in dance-drama. The talk will explore some of these connections, as they can be seen in the artworks in the museum's exhibition.

There'll also be art activities, special storytelling, and a gallery tour of the South Asian galleries (featuring art of India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka).

The Mystical Arts of Tibet with Tibetan Monks of Drepung Loseling Monastery Saturday, November 14, 8:00 pm, Herbst Theatre, SF
The famed multiphonic singers of Drepung Loseling monastery have lately taken the world by storm. Tibetan temple music is known in the West as "overtone singing," and the Tibetans are the only people who cultivate this most extraordinary vocal ability. The Monks also perform a number of sacred dances, including the Snow Lion Dance, and the Dance of the Skeleton Lords, which has been endorsed by His Holiness the Dalai Lama as a means of promoting world peace.

Set in Lucknow, a center of Muslim literature and culture, two friends fall in love with the same woman in this comic but ultimately tragic tale of mistaken identities. Produced by and starring Guru Dutt (a master from the golden age of Hindi cinema), this film was his biggest box-office success.
