Letter from the President

As the new president of Princeton South Jersey, I would like to say hello to all the members of the chapter… HELLO! I would like to thank George Lazarides for his leadership over the past two years, and also thanks to the outgoing board, as well as the new 2009 /2010 board for their commitment and dedication to the chapter. Their efforts have lead to the chapter earning a Platinum rating from APICS for the sixth consecutive year.
I have been with the chapter since 2001 and held various positions with the Board of Directors over the past few years. I am anxious to be starting my term as president and looking for new and different ways to provide value to the membership. I look forward to a fun and productive year, with many of our regular programs and events and some new twists. While the economy and the employment market remain difficult, the Princeton South Jersey chapter is ready to serve you.

Your board is hard at work getting the chapter ready to restart our Education programs and Professional Development Meetings in September, after a summer recess. We will once again offer classes in preparation for CPIM certification and in response to increasing interest in the CSCP certification will provide more classes in preparation for the CSCP exam. Our September Professional Development meeting will be a Case Study in Supply Chain Transformation, presented by Gary Lande and Rick Cathers. For this year we will have many of our PDM’s at a new location, Yogi’s at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Jamesburg, right off Exit 8A of the Turnpike. So come on down and check it out.
Lastly I would like to let everyone know of our new initiative called the South Jersey Expansion Committee. This team consisting of board members, past presidents and chapter members is focused on bringing chapter events and services to our members in the counties further south. This effort includes conducting education classes in Mt. Laurel, plans for four PDM’s in a location in South Jersey and extra attention to the members and companies in the southern portion of our region. This is an exciting opportunity to reunite some of the former South Jersey membership to our chapter.
I am looking for to an exciting year for the PRSJ chapter. If anyone has suggestions, ideas or questions about the chapter, feel free to email me at bwarshofsky@khov.com. We are always looking for members to help our board in coordinating chapter activities. The strength of the chapter comes from its membership, so I encourage each of you to take the opportunity to be involved with the chapter throughout the year.

Supply Chain Transformation
Building a 21st century supply chain takes more than new processes and software. The people manning the supply chain must define the current process limitations and drive development of new processes. We'll explore how a leading manufacturer of audio textbooks changed their supply chain to meet future customer demands.

SPEAKERS
Gary Lande
Gary spent the lion's share of his years in Johnson & Johnson, Amway and
Bristol-Myers Squibb with hands-on responsibility for managing end-to-end supply chain functions from sales forecasting to shipment of goods to customers. His focus is on improvement of forecasting, planning and inventory management, developing effective procurement practices, and improving efficiency in warehousing, distribution and customer service operations. He has experience leading a cross-functional team in the selection and implementation of an ERP system. Gary is a Certified Practitioner in Inventory Management, and is also a Certified Purchasing Manager
Rick Cathers
Rick Cathers is a Change Master and president of MicroCraft, The Knowledge Company. He works with domestic and international clients to identify process problems, develop solutions, implement organizational change and improve financial results. He specializes in process modeling, technology selection, performance measurement development, and quality improvement projects.
Rick actively works to spread the APICS Body of Knowledge. For over 20 years, he has taught CPIM certification review courses. In addition, he develops customized education programs for companies based on these courses. These programs are geared to solve specific educational needs that will help a company to achieve its business objectives. Rick also works with individuals to improve their training and public speaking skills as a Train-the-Trainer and Learning Dynamics for Instructors teacher.
Rick is an active member of APICS. A featured speaker at National and International conferences, seminars and chapter professional development meetings. He is an Adjunct Professor at Camden County College.

Letter from the Editor

Just a few items to discuss for our September Newsletter. There will be subtle changes occurring over the next few months to the newsletter, all in the interest of providing the best information we can to our chapter members.
First - Feedback from our members is ENCOURAGED! We want to provide the best product we can, but input and suggestions are needed so we can put our best foot forward. We encourage our membership to submit potential articles, feedback on content, and suggestions on format.
Can we do everything suggested? Of course not! But the Princeton South Jersey Chapter Board of Directors is committed to our members, if we were not, we would not have volunteered! We will do our best to incorporate any suggestion received that adds value to our newsletter. Suggestions can be sent to any board member or directly to me.
Remember, this is your chapter too, the more you participate, the more you will get out of your membership!
Second – A short section has been added to the newsletter titled “Hints to Navigating our Newsletter”. It can be viewed by choosing the “Navigating Our Newsletter” link in the Topics section of the newsletter. It provides some simple insights on moving around the newsletter.
Third - Last, but not least, a new section has been added to the newsletter, entitled “APICS – What’s in it for Me!”
The purpose of this new section is to highlight what value APICS membership has brought to individual members in our chapter. As Newsletter Editor, I am first up to offer what APICS has done for me. In future issues, other members of your PSJC Board of Directors will be sharing what value APICS has brought to them.
We would like very much to know what value APICS has brought to you so we can share that in our newsletter! Please e-mail me if you would like to share your story.

APICS - "What's in it for Me!"

I was initially introduced to APICS through a former colleague I became reconnected to during my current job search. She invited me to attend one of our chapter’s Professional Development Meetings (PDM’s). Prior to attending the meeting, after researching APICS on the web, I took the plunge and joined in February 2009.
I felt APICS could provide a great opportunity to network and the
PDM’s would help provide some continuing education to aid me in my job search. The first PDM I |

attended covered the 5S methodology which I found to be very informative.
At the PDM, I was introduced to the V.P. of Finance, Bob Wetherill. Bob is a great representative for the chapter who can immediately make you feel at ease. He asked if I was interested in attending the next chapter’s board meeting, I said yes, and the rest is history.
At my first board meeting I met the board members, all volunteers who want to see this chapter thrive and succeed. That camaraderie was a great influence in my decision to volunteer to become the next Newsletter Editor for the chapter.
In the brief six months I have been a member; I have already found support and help in my job search, started building a number of new friendships, and attended APICS’ 34th Congress for Progress. In addition, I took a big leap in my continuing education when I decided to go for my APICS CSCP certification. I took the course offered in March 2009, took the certification test in June and received my passing letter and certification in July!
The CSCP course has allowed me to put my 20 plus years of work experience and time as a global supply chain manager into perspective and has armed me with new knowledge and a new set of tools for my job search.
My APICS experience to date has been very positive and I look forward to my continuing participation with the chapter and supporting our membership through the newsletter.

“Certified Supply Chain Professional” Success Story

Congratulations to the students of the Princeton South Jersey Chapter who have just completed their CSCP exam!
The Princeton South Jersey Chapter recently completed its latest Certified Supply Chain Professional (CSCP) Training course which ran 13 weeks from March through June 2009. There were 10 students registered for the class which was taught by Dave Hollinger at Shiseido America in East Windsor New Jersey. Of the 10 students registered, 7 chose to move forward and take the APICS CSCP exam.
The results were perfect as the pass rate was 100%!
All seven students who took the exam received their CSCP certification! A great achievement as the normal pass rate is reported to be in the area of 70 percent!
Kudos to our instructor Dave Hollinger who played a big part in this success! Dave is a certified APICS instructor in both CPIM and CSCP and was teaching his third CSCP course. He is a manufacturing expert in the areas of supply chain management, lean and flow manufacturing techniques, and change management. Dave’s diverse background comes to play a great deal in his classes as he uses “real life” experiences and examples to help bring home his points during his classes.
For those unfamiliar with the CSCP training, its content covers four modules:
Supply Chain Management Fundamentals
Building Competitive Operations, Planning, and Logistics
Managing Customer and Supplier Relationships
Using Information Technology to Enable Supply Chain Management
APICS CSCP certification is an excellent way for experienced supply chain professionals to gain in-depth knowledge and understanding of the entire supply chain. It brings the entire value chain of your company into perspective and helps you understand what stage of development your company is at and what it takes to move your company forward.
