"The Ups and Downs of Communicating in Joint Ventures" The Ups and Downs of Communicating in Joint Ventures will be presented by Dr. Ted Lithgow, Group Vice-President and General Manager, Schering Plough/Merck Respiratory Joint Venture. Dr. Lithgow was a former adjunct at City University of New York, and a previous speaker at multiple pharma meetings and conferences. Ted has helped to create, develop, and lead Commercial Development and Emerging Technology groups in two large pharma organizations, and will share his experiences and perspective on leading a Joint Venture between two pharma organizations with very different goals and cultures.
One way to keep Joint Venture "rules to live by" well-organized and top of mind is to think of these relationships as as an engagement leading to marriage... Ted will present perspective on alliances, partnerships, and Joint Ventures -- their similarities and critical differences -- and discuss partnership challenges in the context of analogies about relationships for an objective but light-hearted presentation.

Top Management Night in June and Summer Education Offerings
President’s Letter Well here we are, at the closing of another productive season. Our Professional Development Meetings (PDM) ranged from lean business practices used to improve or even save businesses, to looking at distribution systems and what happens when the data needed for efficient operation is not congruent throughout the entire system, e.g. assigning different part numbers to the same part throughout the supply chain. The speaker for our May meeting, Dave Hollinger, gave an outstanding talk on considerations for implementing lean practices. Dave is one of our directors, and we know him well, but his extensive knowledge of the lean paradigm and implementation programs still amaze us. We will close out our season with our Top Management Night on June 18. This year we are going to have a little change of pace. Our businesses rely on communication and human interaction from planning, through scheduling and finally at the execution phases. The topic for this month focuses on another business growth and/or survival tactic widely used today, the joint venture. These organizations are generally formed when several millions of dollars are involved and have unique dynamics. Our speaker, Ted Lithgow, is a Group Vice President at Schering-Plough and the General Manager of a joint venture for respiratory products between Schering-Plough and Merck. Ted’s presentation will lend some insight on how large corporations with extremely large sums of money on the line interact during a joint venture. He will discuss how to manage the communication and commitment of two large pharmaceutical companies so that the venture will be successful and at the same time meet the needs and the demands of the individual companies, which at times can differ significantly. This should be one of our most interesting presentations because it deals with managing individual personalities, corporate cultures, high stakes, and various levels of risk all at the same time.
We will also be presenting our Company of the Year Award to Bristol-Myers Squibb and will introducing our Board of Directors for 2008-2009 at Top Management Night. As for education, our certification exam preparation classes will run through the summer. These classes can help prepare you for certification in Production and Inventory Management or Supply Chain Management. We will be offering: - Detailed Planning and Scheduling, beginning July 10 and lasting 9 weeks, and taught by John Zoller, CFPIM, CIRM at Shiseido America, 366 Princeton-Hightstown Rd, East Windsor, NJ - Strategic Management of Resources, beginning September 18 and lasting 9 weeks, and taught by John Zoller, CFPIM, CIRM at Shiseido America, 366 Princeton-Hightstown Rd, East Windsor, NJ - Basics of Supply Chain Management, start date to be determined, 10 weeks, and taught by Jim O’Donnell, CPIM at OKI Americas, 2020 Bishops Gate Blvd, Mt. Laurel, NJ. Please take advantage of these classes to continue career development. Remember, as with any career path, “if you want to earn more – you have to learn more”. Have a great summer and we hope to see you at out Top Management Night PDM.
