What a Year We Are Having
President’s Message Hello to all of the PRSJ members! What a year we are having!
It is now May and we are starting to wind down our indoor activities in favor of spending more time outside. The 2007-2008 season has been productive. We have had seven Professional Development (PDM) meetings with excellent speakers and we will be closing out the year with two more super speakers. Tim Rody gave an outstanding presentation (Data Integration - Making Your Data Work for Transportation and Logistics) at our April PDM. The focus was on real life cases centering on communication disconnects that caused delays, mistaken shipments, and wasted time in general. Much of problem was attributed to part numbers changing as the materials were transferred from one system to another. Some of the situations were amusing to listen to but, as I’m many of us can testify to, were not so humorous while they were happening to us and customers were starting to wonder if we or our companies knew what we were doing. Tim’s presentation was informative, entertaining and we appreciate the time he took to put it together. We have Dave Hollinger as the guest speaker for May’s PDM. The title is “Lean Business Concepts”. Dave has been in this field for years and is quite accomplished in helping businesses cut waste out of their systems and operations in much of the same way Taiichi Ohno insisted on cutting waste out of Toyota’s manufacturing systems. In fact, part of the presentation will be focusing on the Toyota’s 7 wastes. I expect this presentation to be every bit as good and informative as Dave’s previous talks, so don’t miss this meeting at the Cranbury Inn on May 21st if you are interested in lean methodology to eliminate waste. For our Top Management Night on June 18th , we will have Ted Lithgow, Ph.D. from Schering-Plough as our guest speaker. Dr. Lithgow, a Group Vice President and General Manager of Merck & Schering-Plough Respiratory Joint Venture Global Prescription Business, will present on managing a business formed by two companies where large sums of money are involved and building team work with representatives from various groups within each parent corporation is imperative. I’m really looking forward to this one because sometimes it is difficult to get consensus from different groups just within our own companies. This will be something that all of us should attend and will probably bring home something that would help us in our dealings with team members.
We also have our education courses coming up for certification preparation: "Detailed Planning and Scheduling" for CPIM certification, at East Windsor, Shiseido America, Inc., 9 Weeks on Thursdays ----- beginning July 10th, 6:30 pm “CPIM: Basics of Supply Chain Management” at Mount Laurel, NJ (Okidata): (start TBD) So be sure to join us this month and next month to close out our 2007-2008 season. We look forward seeing all of you! George Lazarides, CPIM

Hello to All of Our Members
Hello to all of our PRSJ members!
V.P. of Membership: Frank Albatangelo I want to thank all those members of the PRSJ chapter who have recently renewed their APICS membership to continue with their APICS education and other chapter benefits. APICS—The Association for Operations Management is an international educational society recognized worldwide for its training and certification programs. Our nearly 70,000 members are resource management professionals from 20,000 manufacturing and service companies around the world. APICS members are individuals responsible for directing the supply chain, materials management, information services, purchasing, customer service, and quality control within their companies. Membership in APICS is open to anyone with an interest in the field of Operations or Resource Management. Although the roots of APICS are in manufacturing production and inventory management, the scope of our society has broadened over the years to address operations and resource management issues in a wide variety of organizations, including banks, utilities, and health care. MEMBERSHIP BENEFITS: APICS membership brings with it a variety of benefits. APICS members receive the monthly magazine, APICS-The Performance Advantage and the APICS Dictionary, as well as the APICS International Conference and Exposition Proceedings. APICS members can participate in a variety of electronic discussion forums, receive information from the APICS Hotline, and take advantage of the APICS Career Center. APICS members receive discounts on the hundreds of publications available at the APICS Bookstore. In addition, APICS members receive discounts on Society educational workshops and programs, as well as discounts on certification exam registration and registration for the APICS International Conference and Exposition. Of course, the opportunity to network with your peers is a benefit that's hard to put a price tag on - you may just find a solution to that problem that's been a real headache for your company! APICS offers several categories of membership, including Professional, Group-Site, and Student. Anyone can join under a Professional membership. A Group-Site membership entitles a specific company facility or location to five designated members who receive the normal APICS publications, but any employee of the company is eligible for member discounts on publications and programs. A Student membership is available to full-time students at accredited institutions of higher learning. Education Educational programs, such as Certified in Production and Inventory Management (CPIM) and Certified Supply Chain Professional (CSCP), provide information regarding the interdependencies of all business disciplines. APICS certifications are internationally recognized, often specified in employment ads, and can provide you with a foot in the door at the next employer. Members in between positions can attend our classes for just the price of the learning materials. Member Application: If you are taking or plan to begin taking courses toward APICS Certification via classes held by APICS PRSJ, it makes good sense to become an APICS member and to qualify for the discount of 15% off each class. Your annual membership cost will be covered by the time you take your second class!! To become a member, either enroll online or download an application and mail it to APICS to start shaping your future today. APICS Membership is $200 ($165 for National Membership and $35 for Chapter dues). Be sure to request to be placed in the Princeton South Jersey chapter.
