To Register: www.apics-prsj.org Lean Tools for the Office - A Lean Office Overview with Live Simulation The goal of an organization is to be a Lean Enterprise – to apply the common sense business practices embodied by Lean Thinking to all areas of a business. There are many well documented successes in manufacturing applications. However, service organizations and administrative processes within manufacturing companies have struggled with applying these concepts.
This workshop will provide an overview of lean concepts, and their application to office and administrative processes. The participants will be introduced to the various lean concepts, and be given the opportunity to apply them in a simulated office. The participants will be able to measure the impact of their improvement effort.
With use of the simulation, the participants will also gain the experience of an actual office kaizen event. Together, the group will identify ideas for improvement. Decisions must be quickly agreed upon. Then, the group will be broken into smaller groups to implement the ideas agreed upon. Strict time expectations will be given for the implementation. Therefore, the experience will closely relate to an actual office kaizen event.
The lean tools are broken into two groups. The first group to be covered prior to Round 2 constitutes the “basics” – standard work, quality at the source, workshop organization, visual controls, people involvement, and batch reduction. Typically, these are concepts that can be quickly implemented (less than 30 days) in an actual office environment. No extensive Information Technology (IT) efforts are required. For example, batch reduction can often be implemented simply by people deciding to perform tasks more frequently. At the end of Round 2, the participants will witness the benefits of implementing the “basics”.
The concepts covered prior to Round 3 include pull, flow, leveling and management timeframe or “pitch”. These constitute the more advanced concepts. These tend to be more difficult for people to understand and apply in an office environment. As in a real office environment, the facilitator will need to closely direct the application of these concepts. At the end of Round 3, the participants will witness the benefits of implementing the more advanced concepts.

Joe D’Urso comes to NJMEP after a 30+ year career as a mechanical engineer and manager of facility and production operations. In his last position, he managed new product introduction and production of wireless communication systems on a build to order basis. Mr. D’Urso joined a ten person project team and advanced with the project to become Operations Director. As a member of the leadership team he designed the facility and helped build the culture that facilitated the group’s growth. Mr. D’Urso was instrumental in the facility becoming the first location to integrate ISO 14000 and OHSAS 18000 with ISO 9000. The location was also recognized with the NJ Governor’s Gold Award for Quality, Industry Week Magazine’s America’s Top Plant Award and the Shingo Prize for Manufacturing Excellence.
In addition to a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering and an MBA, Mr. D’Urso is trained in Quality Processes, Job evaluation and ISO Standards.
Through a wide range of line and staff positions Mr. D’Urso has become an experienced facilitator and successful production manager, who is very skilled at helping management teams identify and prioritize improvement opportunities.

From South Jersey, take Interstate 295 North to Exit 47B, onto Route 541 North, for 3 miles. Route 541 becomes High Street in Burlington. Café Gallery is the last building on the right.
From North Jersey, take New Jersey Turnpike to Exit 5. Turn left onto Route 541 North, for 4 miles. Route 541 becomes High Street in Burlington. Café Gallery is the last building on the right.
From Burlington and Camden County riverfront towns, take Route 130 North to Burlington. Turn left onto High Street from the left lane of Route 130 (High Street is the second traffic light past Liberty Toyota). Take High Street for 4 blocks. Café Gallery is the last building on the right.
From Mercer County, take Interstate 295 South to Exit 47B, onto Route 541 North, for 3 miles. Route 541 becomes High Street in Burlington. Café Gallery is the last building on the right.
From shorepoints, take a westbound highway such as the Atlantic City Expressway from southern shorepoints to Interstate 295 North or Interstate 195 from northern shorepoints to the New Jersey Turnpike and follow the corresponding directions above. From central shorepoints, Route 72 and Route 70 connect with county roads through Pemberton and Mt. Holly to Route 541 to Burlington. Directional signs to the Burlington Bristol Bridge are posted along many of these roads throughout Burlington County.
From Pennsylvania
From Philadelphia, take Interstate 95 North, to Exit 40 (Bristol). Turn right onto Route 413 South for 2.5 miles to the Burlington-Bristol Bridge. (Route 413 South goes under a railroad bridge, turns right just under the railroad bridge and passes Rohm and Haas.)
After crossing the Burlington-Bristol Bridge, take the first left turn, going around a traffic island onto Broad Street. (There are railroad tracks in the center of Broad Street.) Take Broad Street 3 blocks to the first traffic light at High Street. Turn left onto High Street for 2 blocks. Café Gallery is the last building on the right.
From Newtown/Yardley, Bucks County, take Interstate 95 South, to Exit 40 (Bristol) and follow the above directions.
From northern and western suburbs, take the Pennsylvania Turnpike East to New Jersey. Take the first exit, Exit 6A, to Route 130 South for 4 miles to High Street. (High Street is the first traffic light past Auerback Chevrolet.) Turn right onto High Street for 4 blocks. Café Gallery is the last building on the right.

Well here we are in March and it is time to spring into action. Daylight savings time is upon us and was created for the purpose of increasing productivity. We also should be focusing on increasing productivity for ourselves by increasing our knowledge base through certification, and for our companies by employing programs and techniques that have kept or made other organizations successful. We have two Basics of Supply Chain Management courses due to start soon so here is an opportunity to get started on improving your future. Her always lively presentation was informative and produced several points to think about as she presented several aspects of kaizen and lean from her boundless knowledge. Don't miss our next PDM on March 19th. It will be held at the Cafe Gallery in Burlington, NJ. Our speaker will be Joseph D'Urso from NJMEP and his topic will be Lean Tools for the Office - A Lean Office Overview. V.P. of Membership: Frank Albatangelo I want to thank all those members of the PRSJ chapter who have recently renewed their APICS membership to continue with their APICS education and other chapter benefits.
APICS is the Association for Operations Management is an international educational society recognized worldwide for its training and certification programs. Our nearly 70,000 members are resource management professionals from 20,000 manufacturing and service companies around the world. APICS members are individuals responsible for directing the supply chain, materials management, information services, purchasing, customer service, and quality control within their companies. Membership in APICS is open to anyone with an interest in the field of Operations or Resource Management. Although the roots of APICS are in manufacturing production and inventory management, the scope of our society has broadened over the years to address operations and resource management issues in a wide variety of organizations, including banks, utilities, and health care.
