Letter From The President
by Bryan Warshofsky, CPIM

The month of October turned out to be a busy month for the chapter, as advertised. But busy is good. In October we had two Professional Development Meetings, the Mid Atlantic District Meeting and our education programs kicked into full gear. In addition the chapter Board of Directors has been at work developing goals for the year and certifying the budget for 2009/ 2010. As I write this on November 1, I am thankful for the extra hour gained as we turned the clocks back today.

The initial PDM for South Jersey was held October 14th, and was an opportunity for our South Jersey membership to get together for networking and to exchange ideas. Rick Cathers and Gary Lande conducted the same presentation that was held in our regular September PDM. Our second PDM of the month was held in Monroe, NJ and was a presentation by Roger Yackel, Supply Chain Director at Rhodia. We had a good turnout for the meeting, with a diversified group including some new faces and some old friends. Rhodia provided great corporate support with 5 members from their company in attendance. Thanks to Rick, Gary and Roger for their fine efforts and to all who attended for their support of the programs.

For the November PDM, we reached out to the membership to help decide the topic to be presented. Voting was conducted through last month’s newsletter and the topic receiving the most votes was “Forecast Improvement – An Apparent Oxymoron or Why Can’t We Learn How to Forecast”. Our speaker will be Howard Forman. For December, there will be no PDM to allow time to spend with families during the Holiday season. Then in January we will have our second annual PDM at Triumph Brewery in Princeton, an event that those who attended last year remember fondly.

The Mid Atlantic District meeting was held in Cleveland, OH and was attended by a few of our chapter members. The district meeting is an opportunity for members of the various chapters in our district to get together, discuss APICS related issues and chapter activities, and to recognize chapters for their accomplishments. PRSJ was recognized for achieving Platinum in this year’s CBAR submission. Also at the district meeting a presentation was given by Abe Eshkenazi, APICS CEO, about the direction of APICS.

Lastly, our chapter has entered the age of social networking with a group on Linked In. Linked In is a free networking site for professionals. Please take a moment to join the APICS – Princeton South Jersey Chapter on Linked In.

Thanks to everyone for your support of the chapter. We look forward to more opportunities to get members involved with the various chapter activities.

TOPIC

Forecast Improvement – An Apparent Oxymoron - Or Why Can’t We Learn to Forecast?

Today, companies are faced with increasingly complex and conflicting objectives as they strive to remain competitive in today’s global marketplace. Proper demand management is a critical ingredient needed to help companies meet financial and operational supply chain objectives. Remember that failure to properly monitor and control the forecasting process places a company at a competitive disadvantage.

This interactive presentation is designed to provide each attendee with an understanding and knowledge of the forecast process and improvement tools. Each attendee will learn how to assess and evaluate the forecast; how to improve the process; and how to help reduce the volatility of forecast error. Finally each attendee will leave the presentation with practical knowledge that can be immediately applied to help answer the following questions:
  • What is the financial impact of poor forecasting?
  • Why do I need to address the issue of data integrity and metrics?
  • How do I assess if the forecasting process meets supply chain objectives?
  • How does poor forecasting hurt customer service and delivery performance?

Global Ability – APICS International Conference
Held in Toronto (October 4th - 6th)
www.apics.org/Education/conference/default.asp
by Blair Williams CFPIM, CSCP, Jonah

I attended the 2009 conference and exhibition, presented a paper, mentored two young college students and took part in a play ‘Global portraits now’ – so I was rather busy. If you have never attended an APICS International conference, plan to do so. It is a wonderful experience in reinforcing your interest and your enthusiasm in the value of APICS. In addition, you get to see some very interesting places and meet some very dynamic professionals.

The conference was held at the Metro Toronto Convention – a very impressive and well designed meeting venue. An added benefit to visiting Canada is meeting gentle, friendly and very helpful locals. Due to the recession, attendance for participants and exhibitors was down.

There were a large number of foreign attendees - Australia, South Africa, Europe, India, Far East and Middle East – and statistics revealed that the current CPIM and CSCP certifications abroad exceed that of the States. There is survey evidence that having a CPIM and/or a CSCP increases the likelihood of employment in the USA and abroad, and, adds a 15% to 20% additional salary premium.

Business thought-leader and best-selling author Jason Jennings opened the 2009 APICS International Conference & Expo. After studying more than 120,000 companies around the world, Jennings told attendees that he would teach them how to inspire employees, build a powerful company culture, and become highly effective stewards of their organizations.

Stewardship, he explained, "means” service over self-interest; abandoning power over other people; preserving natural and human resources; and being nurturing, authentic, and selfless... The world's greatest leaders see themselves as stewards of capital, people, resources, vendors, suppliers, and shareholders."

The conference had six Learning Paths:

• Lean - Today’s economy requires you to do more with less.
• Global Supply Chain - Remain relevant in the global marketplace.
• Basics of Operations Management - Set your career and skills on solid footing.
• Demand Management, Forecasting, and Sales and Operations Planning
• Professional Advancement - Prepare to take your next professional step.
• Special-Interest Topics - Complement and deepen your knowledge base.

I attended a few sessions and found them very educational. I also spent time in the Exhibition and checked out the latest optimization software.

Overall it was a most enjoyable and productive conference.

APICS - "What's in it for Me!"
by Peter J Blok, PhD

My career has been a gift in many ways, moving from R&D, to process development, to production and commercial operations.  I wish I could say it was all by brilliant design but frankly some of it was a bit of luck.

I fell into the pharmaceutical business in 1983 after a tour in the Navy and a short stint in chemical engineering. I was befriended by an operations guy who introduced me to APICS in northern New Jersey.

I remember going to meetings whe reclasses would start at 5 pm and PDM’s at 6:30 pm.  Dozens of people were in classes and what seemed like a hundred people would be at the meetings.  I was a bit overwhelmed.  I was a process development guy at the time and my operations management skill set was sad to be kind.  Those meetings opened my eyes to a world one doesn’t often see as a young person.  A mix of young pups like me and old hands from dozens of companies all sharing friendships and ideas. All sharing a common passion, finding ways to do what they do every day better.

I’ve been in and around APICS now for over 25 years. I’ve been a member of a few different chapters over the years depending on where my job was. But there has been one common theme – get better at what you do – for yourself and for your employer.

What does APICS mean?  Of course the training & education. But also the exchange of ideas at the meetings.  The PDM presentations are, of course, very informative, but also the informal interchange.  Meeting other practitioners of the art of operations management from other companies has been of great value.  I’m met many people, some from my own industry and some from other industries.  The dialog always sparks and idea or two that I can apply to by day-to-day job. So what does APICS mean to me? In way the best word to describe it is enrichment.

Education and Certification Update
www.apics-prsj.org/Education.htm
by John Zoller, CFPIM, CIRM

APICS Certification has always been recognized by business leaders as a benchmark of professional performance. Whether CPIM (Certified in Production and Inventory Management), CFPIM (Certified Fellow in Production and Inventory Management), CIRM (Certified in Integrated Resource Management) or the new CSCP (Certified Supply Chain Professional), many APICS professionals have the job experience, subject knowledge, and have passed the proficiency examinations necessary to earn the use of these designations after their name.

At the Princeton South Jersey Chapter (PRSJ) of APICS, you too can earn these Certifications with the help of the education classes offered at our East Windsor and Mt. Laurel locations. While CIRM is no longer being offered by APICS, the PRSJ is currently holding classes for CPIM DSP (Detailed Scheduling and Planning) and the increasingly popular CSCP program.

The next class starting dates are planned as follows:
  • December 3rd in East Windsor, CPIM ECO (Execution and Control of Operations)
  • January 7th in Mt. Laurel, CPIM DSP (Detailed Scheduling and Planning)
  • January 5th and 7th in Mt. Laurel and East Windsor respectively CPIM BSCM (Basics of Supply Chain Management).
CSCP classes will return in early March at both locations. Our classes are taught by APICS Master Instructors who look forward to seeing you earn your APICS Certification.
