"Managing Vendor Relationships and the Supply Chain in today's Economy"

Everyone wants to control costs in their company, but that is easier said than done. In today's market, it is more critical than ever to effectively manage purchasing and procurement across your organization. Knowing and understanding costs, forming partnerships with vendors and establishing and following "best practices" are keys to controlling and reducing costs. No matter what industry or department you are in, we are all faced wit the challenges of procuring quality products, from trusted suppliers at the best possible cost.

As a homebuilding company, K. Hovnanian has been greatly affected by the economic downturn. This has led the company to re-evaluate business practices, change strategies and discover new ways to manage the supply chain. This presentation will discuss different techniques and procedures that can be used as the business climate changes, how companies can keep control of their supply chain through this difficult economy and also provide the opportunity for success when the recovery begins.

Mark Voetsch is Corporate Vice President of Purchasing and Cost Containment for K. Hovnanian Homes Inc, located in Red Bank New Jersey. We are lucky to have Mark as our speaker since his company is in one of the most volatile industries around. Managing a supply chain where firms enter and exit at a high rate seems challenging enough, but add the downturn in new housing demand and uncertainly of today's economy and it seems more like having a tiger by the tail. Be sure to join us at Olde York Country Club to learn how K. Hovnanian manages a dynamic process in an unusual time.

Hello to All of Our PRSJ Members

Hello to all of our PRSJ members!
V.P. of Membership: Frank Albatangelo

It is June and  I want to thank all those members of the PRSJ chapter who have recently renewed their APICS memberships to continue with their APICS education and other chapter benefits. I would also like to extend a special welcome to our new members.

APICS-The Association for Operations Management is an international educational society recognized worldwide for its training and certification programs. Our nearly 70,000 members are resource management professionals from 20,000 manufacturing and service companies around the world. APICS members are individuals responsible for directing the supply chain, materials management, information services, purchasing, customer service, and quality control within their companies.

Membership in APICS is open to anyone with an interest in the field of Operations or Resource Management. Although the roots of APICS are in manufacturing production and inventory management, the scope of our society has broadened over the years to address operations and resource management issues in a wide variety of organizations, including banks, utilities, and health care. MEMBERSHIP BENEFITS: APICS membership brings with it a variety of benefits. APICS members receive the monthly magazine, APICS-The Performance Advantage and the APICS Dictionary, as well as the APICS International Conference and Exposition Proceedings. APICS members can participate in a variety of electronic discussion forums, receive information from the APICS Hotline, and take advantage of the APICS Career Center.

APICS members receive discounts on the hundreds of publications available at the APICS Bookstore. In addition, APICS members receive discounts on Society educational workshops and programs, as well as discounts on certification exam registration and registration for the APICS International Conference and Exposition. Of course, the opportunity to network with your peers is a benefit that's hard to put a price tag on - you may just find a solution to that problem that's been a real headache for your company!

APICS offers several categories of membership, including Professional, Group-Site, and Student. Anyone can join under a Professional membership. A Group-Site membership entitles a specific company facility or location to five designated members who receive the normal APICS publications, but any employee of the company is eligible for member discounts on publications and programs. A Student membership is available to full-time students at accredited institutions of higher learning. Education Educational programs, such as Certified in Production and Inventory Management (CPIM) and Certified Supply Chain Professional (CSCP), provide information regarding the interdependencies of all business disciplines. APICS certifications are internationally recognized, often specified in employment ads, and can provide you with a foot in the door at the next employer. Members in between positions can attend our classes for just the price of the learning materials.

Member Application: If you are taking or plan to begin taking courses toward APICS Certification via classes held by APICS PRSJ, it makes good sense to become an APICS member and to qualify for the discount of 15% off each class. Your annual membership cost will be covered by the time you take your second class!! To become a member, either enroll online or download an application and mail it to APICS to start shaping your future today. APICS Membership is $200 ($165 for National Membership and $35 for Chapter dues). Be sure to request to be placed in the Princeton South Jersey chapter. Come to Our Top Management Night!
Presidents Letter

Don't Miss Our Top Management Night on June 17.

We have a really great Professional Development Meeting (PDM) planned for this month. It is our 2008-2009 Top Management Night!  This year we have Mark Voetsch from K. Hovnanian Homes speaking about “Managing Vendor Relationships and the Supply Chain in Today’s Economy”.

As we can all imagine, or have personally experienced, these aren’t easy tasks to accomplish in good economic times.  Operating in today’s economy requires a lot of thought and creativity, as well as returning to some of the more basic personal and business relationship practices.  Mark Voetsch is the Vice President of Purchasing and Cost Containment for K. Hovnanian and I’m sure he will have a wealth of insight to share with us.  We hope to see you at the Olde York Country Club in Chester, NJ on Wednesday, June 17.  To register, just go our website at www.apics-prsj.org and fill out the brief form.

Last month was our Career Development Month and we had one of our favorite experts in career counseling, Gary Pezzuti, as our guest speaker. Gary also conducted an afternoon career development seminar at no charge for anybody who wanted help with their careers.  Gary was once again entertaining and informative at our PDM and held a productive interactive session about some of our behaviors at work that either conflict with basic manners or give other people the wrong impression.  We had a super time talking about one-on-one conversations, treatment of office guests, and phone manners.  His presentation gave us some things to think about.

We have a certification preparatory course starting this month. Just taking this course could start you on your way towards APICS certification. Give it some thought and maybe it’s time you got started on increasing your skill set for better job opportunities.  Remember, “If you want to earn more, you have to learn more.”  You can get more information about our courses, and other areas of our Chapter by going to our website. Our course for this month is:

June 16, 2009    Basics of Supply Chain Management in East Windsor, NJ

We are winding down our 2008-2009 year and I want to thank all of you for the support you’ve given me for the last two years as the President of the Princeton South Jersey Chapter. Our next President will be Bryan Warshofski.  He's got a lot of good ideas and  will be super president.  I will still be on the board of directors and will enjoy remaining involved with our great chapter.  I look forward to seeing all of you at our PDMs for 2009-2010.
