Alpha Five V5 Features for the End User
by The Experts

Alpha Five version 5 is packed with new features. Here are some that will appeal to the end user.

Alpha Five version 5 has a ton of new features.  While many will make the developer's job a lot easier, we still have to convince the end user that it's worth the upgrade.

This end user could be a customer of yours, or a group that you work with that will use what you develop.

Here is a list of many of the new or improved features that the users will care about (in the September issue, we will show the improvements for the developer):

1.

Spell checker.

2.

Find by key stays open, so you can do multiple finds without re-opening it.

3.

You can change indexes in Find by key, making it easier to find values from different fields.

4.

Find by key auto-completes, based on previous values used.

5.

Find by key displays past values in a list.  This is nice when you alternate between finding several values repeatedly.

6.

Built-in e-mail client allows you to send and manage e-mails directly through Alpha Five.  This also means you can easily e-mail your reports and send 'mailmerged' e-mails right from your database.

7.

Bubble help can be turned on for new users.

8.

Export data to Excel with a single button.

9.

Export to Adobe (*.PDF).

10.

Print to PDF or HTML.

11.

Mail merge to Word with one button.

12.

Navigate to a specific field on a form, based on the field name.  This is useful for forms with many fields.

13.

Copy the last field or record viewed (previously, the copy only worked for the last record in the table).

14.

Change or remove dates and other masked values more easily (you no longer have to remove each character in the value).

15.

You can select Modal data entry, which means you have to initiate a change or enter (similar to Alpha Four).  This makes it less likely to accidentally change a value.

16.

Improved passwords and encryption.  Now, even the data can be encrypted.

17.

Put shading or a blank line into a report every n lines, to make long reports easier to read.

18.

Sort lookup window by any column.  This will make finding an item much easier because you can sort by any field in the lookup list.

19.

An audit trail is available.  This will make accountants happy (if such a thing is possible).

20.

You can go to any page in a report preview.  This will make verifying a long report much easier.

21.

You can count business days between two dates.  This new feature includes being able to input your company's special holidays.

22.

There is a pop-up calendar.

23.

Zoom from a record in an embedded browse to a form view of the same record in the child table.

24.

Improved QBF genie, which now completely replaces query by table.

25.

Cross-level queries now supported without the use of cumbersome "flattenquery" syntax.

26.

Quick filter on more than one field.

27.

"Top N" and "Top N%" queries, so, for example, you can find the top 10 orders, or the top 10% of the orders.

28.

Finally, perhaps the biggest selling point is the reduction in time needed to develop an application, with the corresponding reduction in the amount charged.  Let's face it, all the great features in the world don't matter if you can't give your customer something they can afford.
