Alpha Five Application Server
The Alpha Five Application Server will allow you to bring your database
applications into the 21st century and give your users access to them over
the World Wide Web. Alpha Five has long been the tool of choice for robust
network databases, and with this latest addition to the Alpha Software
lineup, you can use the Internet to share your databases.
Sharing your databases on the Internet is as simple as a few clicks and
then giving out your server's address to your database users. They open up
a web browser, go to that address, and browse and query your data. They can
even add new records and delete or modify existing ones if you choose to permit them to do so.
Alpha Five Application Server does not rely on IIS, Apache or any other web
server software, so you can continue working within the familiar Alpha Five
interface. Why spend time to learn and administer new server software when
you can just keep building applications like you always have?
The clients require only a standard web browser, and need no Active-X controls or
Java downloads. This means that you no longer need to worry about
installing Alpha Five on each workstation that will access your data. In
fact, the clients don't even need to be running Windows - now Mac, Linux
and Unix users can access your Alpha Five databases too!
And because the Alpha Five Application Server is essentially an Internet-enabled Xbasic server, Xbasic developers can build rich web applications without the need for ASP, ColdFusion, PHP or any other web programming languages. This means there's no need to learn a new language just to build your
applications on the Internet - if you already know Xbasic, you are about to
become an Internet programmer!
The release date should be 3-6 months after the release of Alpha Five version 5.
Editor's note: Lenny is the product manager and Web guru for Alpha.
