Sadly, 1991 Cabot Award winner Leroy LoPresti died last night as the result of a fall. He had been in a coma for a few weeks after a fall from his roof July5th (he was a vigorous and energetic man who liked to take care of his own projects around his property) - but had come out of the coma and wasbeginning a promising recovery. He died in his sleep, apparently of a bloodclot. He was a brilliant engineer, and at age 73 he had many projects intheworks. He will be sorely missed, both as a great mind and a fine man.

On a more positive note, what a day we had last weekend.   Katama's sun blazed hot and clear for us, and down swept Santa Claus from the bright blue sky, roaring in in a C-47! Who'd a thought it... Santa in August, patting the kids and posing for pictures. It was the surprise of the year! But most of you were there to see this. Was this terrific, or what???

Such a crowd pleaser -- the whole event was the truly best ever, with warbirds (5 gleaming T-6s, a shining P-51 - and the spectacular C-47) pulled together by Bill Richardson at Dave Graham's prompting (yes, Virginia - Santa Claus was really Dave..) We drew the biggest crowds ever from the good publicity (thank you Cynthia Bloomquist!).

It was a hoot. The spot-landing contest started at 9:30 bringing in far more planes than ever before (I don't have a count yet - but FBO manager Roy Nutting was grinning from ear to ear). And guess who won? Well MEL DORR, of course. Nobody else has a chance!

At the end of the day -- after some had spent the late afternoon browsing boutiques or lolling awhile on the beaches -- members gathered for a sumptuous and merry dinner in an absolutely perfect, elegant setting among tall trees and gree lawns (Lambert's Cove Country Inn). New members Chris and Linda Daly joined us. They signed on Saturday at Katama. Welcome aboard, Chris and Linda!"

Please join us at our fall Basin Harbor Fly-in (see announcement & sidebar for details).
