Cats Crave the Water of Canned Foods

Just like their owners, our four-legged friends need water to keep their body cool and maintain healthy function of their circulatory, cardiovascular, renal and other systems. Unlike us, however, they can't walk to the refrigerator for a bottle of H20 whenever their bodies are crying out for hydration.

Eureka!: Young Scientist Demonstrates Benefits of Wellness
Although there is no shortage of empirical evidence about the advantages of an all-natural pet diet, there's always room for more research. In fact, a new study from an emerging scientist has produced some compelling data, further supporting the position that organic, natural foods confer significant health benefits for pets. This recent addition to a growing body of research comes from an enthusiastic and diligent young mind - that of Travis Wells, a student at McCullough Junior High, The Woodlands, Texas.

Make the Right Start with Wellness Just for Puppy

Many pet owners especially those new to pet parenting stare ponderously at the array of foods on the pet store shelf and wonder why they can't simply buy whatever is on sale that week. Of course, as an independent pet products retailer, you know that newborn and young animals need more than just wholesome, high quality ingredients in the foods they eat; they also require a stable, consistent diet. In fact, most veterinarians will tell you that repeated switching of food brands can cause GI problems and intolerance in growing animals whose digestive tracts are ever adjusting to solid foods.

A Broadened Collection

To help dog owners get off on the right foot, Wellness has broadened its collection of puppy products under the new name of Wellness Just for Puppy a complete line of food and treats that provide puppy parents with an array of smart nutritional choices to ensure their dog enjoys a lifetime of good health and wellbeing

Advice from the Vet
This Issue: In Grain-Free, Protein-Rich Diets, Balance is King

In this regular column, Edward Moser, VMD, DACVN, weighs in with insights on a variety of pet nutrition topics, helping you counsel customers and build stronger relationships in the store.

With so much focus these days on the benefits of the grain-free recipe, it seems increasingly likely that a key consideration is being overlooked by some makers of natural foods. Providing a diet that is free of grains and rich in meat and other protein sources is all well and good, but other nutritional elements must also be taken into consideration or the resulting diet could ultimately prove harmful to pets.

Balanced Recipes

Creating a truly healthful, beneficial pet food is a real balancing act. Choosing the right ingredients is a great start, but turning them into a terrific, nutritious recipe is all about balance. For instance, it's critical for pet parents to be aware that the addition of more meat ingredients to a formula naturally increases not just the protein content, but also the fat, calcium, phosphorus and calorie levels.
