Difficult words
 
I had to give a speech on the lumber business at a recent conference here in Vancouver. I was preceded by three speakers, two of whom were Chinese. It reminded me of how difficult it is to make an effective presentation, especially in a foreign language.

This month, Yuka Chi has earned the title of Linguist Learner of the Month. She is a 32 year-old Japanese lady who has been living in Vancouver since 2003. She moved to Vancouver to work as a graphic artist. She is working for the same American company that she worked for in Japan.

There are many myths about pronunciation. Some claim that good pronunciation depends on an ear for music or other natural talents. I believe that pronunciation is a skill that is quite dependent on attitude. I know monolingual people who mastered the pronunciation of very different languages.
