I often get
resistance to the idea that language learning should not emphasize grammar
instruction. I do not try to learn grammar rules when I learn a new language. I
deliberately ignore them. I do not understand or remember them. I just imitate
what I hear and see.

Off To Europe
Excerpt from Steve's book, The Linguist

by Steve Kaufmann
My Adventure Begins
The success of my efforts in Montreal made me more committed to mastering French and so I decided to go to France. Commitment leads to success and success reinforces commitment.
In June of 1962, I quit my summer construction job and went to the Montreal docks to look for a working trip to Europe. For three days I climbed on board oceangoing freighters, asked to see the Captain and then offered to work in exchange for passage to Europe. On the third day I got lucky. A small German tramp steamer, the Gerda Schell out of Flensburg, had lost a sailor in Quebec City and needed a crewman for the return voyage. I was on my way.

Another Rainy Summer Day

by Kindrey Doyle
We’re having one of the worst starts to the summer that I can remember in Vancouver. Every day we wake up and look hopefully out the window to see if the forecast was wrong (which it often is in this part of the world), but no such luck the past couple of months. It seems as though it’s either cloudy, sprinkling, or downright pouring with rain. The kids have been out of school for a week and I’m wondering what we will do with the rest of July and August if this weather keeps up the way it has. We miss swimming at the beach the most. My kids, not unlike most, tend to get on each other’s nerves when confined to the house for too long. They’ll bug each other until even the sanest person is driven crazy.

It’s probably one of the most powerful “anglicizing” forces
in the world today: American, Canadian, British, even Australian popular music.
(But especially American!)
