The importance of phrases.
Few people try as hard to learn languages as I do. My
bookshelves are full of books, tapes, and CDs in French, Spanish, Chinese,
Japanese, Korean, Italian, Swedish, Portuguese, and others I have not yet
started including Arabic and Russian. I download content to listen to on my MP3
player.

by Jill Soles
Hello. My name is Jill Soles and I live in Vancouver, Canada. My interest in languages began at a very
early age. I began speaking French in
kindergarten and continued my education in French until grade 12. After graduating from high school, I
continued my studies at Simon Fraser University. While there, I earned an undergraduate degree in French
Literature. I also spent two years
studying and speaking Spanish. My many
years of studying languages have led to my desire to help others learn my
native language - English. I have a
certificate in Teaching English as a Second Language and I hope to pass on some
of what I have learned through The Linguist system.

One thing that makes The Linguist so efficient is the chance
to combine different features of the system. There are three features that not
everyone uses which can really help you to improve if you use them together. Here
is what I mean.

The Busiest Month of the Year

People
will tell you that Christmas is the busiest time of the year, but I beg to
differ. September is just crazy around
my house and it seems to be caused by my three kids starting school again. It’s not an easy transition from summer to
school. Suddenly we have to set an alarm clock, there are lunches to be made,
snacks to pack, library books
and homework that must return to school with the appropriate child on
the appropriate day. We’re always in a
hurry once school starts.

The Linguist: Discovering Asia
Discovering Asian Culture
Creating An Opportunity, Ottawa 1967
He who depends on himself will attain the greatest happiness.
– Yi Jing (Book of Changes), 2nd Millenium BC
I did not know when I entered the Canadian Diplomatic Service that I would
end up being immersed in the cultures of both China and Japan. My language
adventure would soon confront me with the challenge of learning languages that
previously had seemed strange and distant to me. To achieve fluency in these
languages required commitment, intensity and good learning techniques. But I
could not have succeeded without a strong interest in the people and the
culture, and the confidence that I would become a fluent speaker of these
languages.

Greetings Young and Old
When I was a child, I was a typical
child. The salutation between my friends was most often a "hey" with
a slight lift of the hand as if to prove neither were hiding a pointed stick
or, conversely, keeping some delicious snack food to ourselves. If the
situation demanded something fantastically formal, we would offer one another a
"hi."
I had a medium-sized group of male
friends and one or two girl friends; who I swore were not my "girlfriends,"
but just friends who happened to be girls.

by Mark Kaufmann
In September we completely redesigned our front page and all
informational pages. We also redesigned the system pages themselves and
introduced some new, more lively design elements. We think the new look and
feel of the site is a major enhancement to The Linguist and marks a major
milestone in our development.
